The rain has stopped. There is water in the shallow places between the stones, and the trees have become very dark. For a few seconds, the whole landscape seems to be holding its breath.

A place without a map

We did not give this place a name. A name would have brought a country with it, a season, a route back. Instead, we began with a surface: slate, darkened by water. Then a temperature. Then the distant outline of trees.

After Rain grew out of that arrangement of sensations. Petrichor and a mineral accord form the first impression. Vetiver introduces a green, rooted quality. Cedar and moss remain when the imagined view has faded.

You know this place. You have never been here.

The space between

The most interesting part of a landscape is sometimes the space between its details. Between the water and the far bank. Between a sound and the silence that follows it. Between recognising something and remembering where it belongs.

That interval gives this fragrance its character. The composition is not a literal photograph of rain. It is an invitation to supply the missing distance yourself.

Wear it as a place to return to, even if the first time you arrive is the first time it has existed.
